| Barnhart Families, As we enter the month of October, we are in the full swing of our academic year. Please take a moment and read this entire newsletter, and all school communication, as it is packed with important information! Reminders:
- Parent conferences are a very important part of this month, please reach out to your teacher and schedule yours today if you haven't already.
- Safety remains our top priority, please be sure to follow all arrival and dismissal procedures closely. No cars in the bus lanes from 8:45-9:00 am. We have begun unloading more cars at a time to help the line move more quickly.
- We will complete Bus Evacuations as well as specific school safety drills this month, be sure to discuss the importance of these drills with your students.
- Ensuring that our students arrive on time is critical. When students arrive late, they miss breakfast and begin their day feeling rushed. Remember, students must be seated in their classrooms by 9:00 a.m., or they will be marked tardy.
- Please be sure your contact information is up to date so that we can contact you when needed. Communication between the home and the school are an integral part of your student's success.
October is filled with exciting activities, and we want to encourage all of our students to continue soaring as Blue Jays and striving for excellence by following all school rules.
We are all looking forward to many fun things this month, let’s make October a great one!

I have been in this community since November of 2023. I had the pleasure of working with Dr. King and now Mrs. Burke, who has been a wonderful addition to the school community. Prior to working here, I was a Supervisor for Healthy Families America's home visiting staff at Center for Children in La Plata for nearly 3 years. I have been working with children and families for over 20 years.
I have two CCPS students, one of which was a Bluejay last year. Many of you might know Ra'Niyah and her smiling face. My children are now in the 6th and 8th grade. I love them so much! |
| Ms. Queen, Registrar | I am the Registrar/Attendance Secretary. I have worked in the office here at Barnhart since 2015. I have 2 wonderful children that attend CCPS; my son is in kindergarten and my daughter is in 10th grade. If you need to contact me, I can be reached by email @ tmqueen@ccboe.com or phone 301-753-1781 ext. 121083. |
| Ms. Cannon, Parent Liaison | I am your Title I Family Liaison. I am here to help foster the relationship between school and families. It is my goal to create a family-like school community by increasing parental involvement and creating events that caters to the entire family. I look forward to working with you all this year. You can reach me at rcannon@ccboe.com if you have any questions or would like to volunteer. |
| | Ms. Clark, Secretary | Hello! I've been working as a secretary with Barnhart for about 5 years now. I am split between here and Jenifer Elementary so you might not see me often. I recently got married in May so you may also know me by Ms. Ogburn if you don't recognize the name. If you need to get in touch with me my email is samclark@ccboe.com! |
| Nurse Bre, School Nurse | I am so excited to be the School Nurse here at Barnhart for the 2024 2025 SY! This school is close to my heart because I have been a part of the Barnhart family since 2019 when my oldest son first started PreK here! I graduated from Howard University, and I have been an RN since 2013. I have been working as a School Nurse specifically since 2018. I have worked in almost every school in the county as a Float Nurse and this is my first year having my own school! Some fun facts about me: I am a boy mom of 3, ages 5, 7 and 9 who all attend Barnhart! My husband is a DC fire fighter, and he use to do fire safety presentations for a few PreK classes in the county! I love cats and have 2 cat babies at home! My favorite color is pink! I look forward to a FUN and SAFE school year with your kiddos! I can be contacted by email: brsewell@ccboe.com any time or phone 301-751-1781 during normal school hours. |
| Ms. Ameen, PPW | My name is Zarina Ameen and I proudly serve as the Pupil Personnel Worker (PPW) at Barnhart. This is my 24th year working for Charles County Public Schools. I served as a School Counselor for 19 of those years. As a PPW, I work with families to improve school attendance, link families with outside resources, work with our students who may be homeless/displaced and even help with registering new students for school. I work at three elementary schools in Waldorf: Barnhart, Eva Turner Elementary and Arthur Middleton Elementary. I am at Barnhart on Monday mornings and Wednesdays and can be reached via email at zameen@ccboe.com. I love working with students and families, so please reach out if I can be of any assistance. |
| | | This month, I will be compiling Barnhart’s initial screening list for gifted services in the 2025-2026 academic year. The preliminary candidate pool will include students in Grades 4-5 who excelled on last year’s MCAP tests and students in Grades 3-5 who exceeded expectations on this year’s baseline i-Ready Diagnostic assessments. Students who are working with the gifted/enrichment curricula but are not yet formally identified for services will also be included. Additionally, I will be preparing our 2nd Graders for the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), which they will take in November. The CogAT measures aptitude, or potential for learning, and students who achieve a qualifying score will be screened for gifted services as well.
If you are the parent of a student in Grades 2-5 who you believe may be academically gifted and would like to ensure your child is included in our candidate pool regardless of these other criteria, visit CCPS’s Gifted Education Services website at www.ccboe.com/departments/gifted-education-services and complete the Parent Referral Form linked in the Gifted Identification section. Please also be on the lookout for an invitation to attend a family information session on gifted services (including the screening and identification process), which I will be hosting at Barnhart in the near future. | | | Happy October Barnhart families! Our Blue Jays are FALLing into our literacy routines nicely here at school. Be sure to encourage your students to read (and write) consistently at home to practice their skills. We have some exciting literacy activities coming up this fall for our students! Barnhart will be adding extra literacy activities the week of October 28th, leading up to our Fall Festival! Look for more information coming soon about this exciting literacy event! | | | How Can I Help My Child in Math?Be Positive About Math! - Let your child know that everyone can learn math.
- Let your child know that you think math is important and fun!
- Point out ways family members use math at work.
- Be positive about your own math abilities. Try to avoid saying 'I was never good at math.' or "I never liked math."
- Encourage your child to be persistent when a problem seems hard.
- Praise your child when he or she makes an effort and share in the excitement when he or she solves a problem correctly or understands something for the first time.
Make Math Part of Your Child's Day- Point out to your child the many ways math is used each day.
- Encourage your child to show you how they use math every day.
- Include your child in activities that involve math- making purchases, measuring ingredients, counting out plates and utensils.
- Play games and do puzzles with your child that involve math.
- Do math problems with your child for fun.
Encourage Your Child to Give Explanations- When you child is trying to solve a math problem, ask what he or she is thinking. If your child seems puzzled, ask him or her to tell you what doesn't make sense. (Talking about their ideas and how they reach solutions helps children learn to reason mathematically.
- Suggest that your child act out a problem to solve it. Have your child show how he/she reached a conclusion by drawing pictures and moving objects as well as using words.
- Treat errors as opportunities to learn something new.

October is Bully Prevention Month. We will have anti-bullying posters displayed throughout the school the entire month. Take some time and talk to your child about bullying. Here is further information on how to have a conversation with your child as well as how to report bullying at school. www.stopbullying.gov and https://www.ccboe.com/departments/student-services/student-support/bullying-harassment-intimidation
October is National Principal Month!!! Every Friday, we will learn something new and interesting about our Principal, Mrs. Burke. That's not all, our 3rd-5th graders can participate in writing a paragraph about "Why are principals important" for a chance to be a principal for a day. The PTO board will collect the paragraphs and pick a student per grade to be a principal for part of a day! Let's show Mrs. Burke some Blue Jay pride and have students drop off snacks and sweet treats to her this month!
The PTO Membership Drive is still going on until October 11. Please complete the membership form and submit dues to your child's teacher. The class with the most parents signed up wins an ice cream social 🍦!
October 2nd is Custodial Worker's Recognition Day! Have your child show their appreciation by bringing in sweet treats, Gatorade, water, snacks, or a written note for the Custodial Staff.
October 6-12 is Fire Prevention Week. This year's theme is "Smoke Alarms: Make them work for you!" Check out this website for more information. https://www.nfpa.org/events/fire-prevention-week
Join us at our next PTO Meeting on October 17th at 5:30 in the Media Center at the school. Mrs. Travers will be our guest speaker talking about Bully Prevention. Don't forget childcare is provided!
The School Store's first opening will be October 24-25th and October 28-30th. New location alert!! It is now located in trailer 6 behind the school. Students will be able to shop at the school store during their recess using the Dojo points they have been working hard to receive. Parents, we need 30 minutes of your time to make the school store openings for this year a success. Without your help and support, we will not be able to effectively run the school store. The hours for the dates listed above are from 11 am-2 pm. Please sign up to work at the school store. All volunteers must complete a volunteer registration with Mrs. Cannon. If you are interested, please send an email to Barnhartpto@gmail.com. We will then send you the Sign-Up Genius with the available hours. | | | | | | Self-ControlChoosing to do what’s best even when you don’t want to.
